Choosing an Aquarium
- A Few Things to Remember
For many people who are getting ready to add an aquarium to their home the main concern is what

First of all, always thoroughly check the tank before purchasing it. Many people make the mistake of thinking that all aquariums have been stored properly and have never been used. What many people do not realize is that some dealers have used the tanks in display, purchased them second hand, or has not done anything to properly maintain the tank. Check to make sure the tank is clean and if you are purchasing a tank that is already on display and stocked with fish check to see if all of the fish are in good health. Look for any dead or listless fish since this might indicate a fungus or parasite that might come along with your tank and kill the fish you attempt to purchase and stock the tank with.
Secondly, find out how many fish the aquarium will be able to comfortably hold. Ask the dealer how many fish of various sizes and varieties can be put into the tank and have an idea of what sort of fish you are planning to get. Just because a tank might seem large enough it might not be the right size for the type of fish you plan to get or the number of fish you plan to have. Never guess or assume the aquarium will be the right size since some fish need more space than others and looks can always be a bit deceiving.
Third, find out if the aquarium makes it easy for you to control the temperature of the water. A lot of people assume that they can buy any type of fish and dump them into water. That is not always the case since many tropical fish need to have very warm water while other types need cooler water. Make sure that you can control and make adjustments to the water in your new aquarium before purchasing it.
These three things should help make purchasing an aquarium easier. If you still have questions or are worried about making the wrong choice then never hesitate to ask someone. When ordering an aquarium online never hesitate to email questions to customer service and if you are going to a brick and mortar store pull aside a sales rep and ask them anything you are curious about. Also, try to take a friend with you that already has fish when going to pick out an aquarium. They might be able to point out things that you may forget and be able to ask questions that would not occur to someone who has never owned fish before.
